A word on drainage interceptor traps…

In older properties, interceptor traps were originally installed to prevent air from the sewr from venting into domestic systems when the authorities were unsure of the health risks that this foul air may carry.Interceptors can cause waste matter to sit in the outlet of a chamber until the next flush and often cause a blocked drain.

Interceptor Trap Sited On The Outlet Of Manhole

A basic interceptor found on the outlet of a chamber has a rodding point fitted over the top to access the outgoing pipe work.In the collar end of this rodding shaft would be a clay cap would form a seal until access is  required. However these lids can end up in the trap itself or are missing creating a direct vent and defeating the purpose of the interceptor.

These traps can be blocked solid with the waste water flowing through the rodding point and into the outlet pipe. This can continue for years causing silt and debris to build up in the system upstream of the chamber.

Stand Alone Interceptor Trap

This interceptor is commonly found before the drainage system crosses a boundary line, instead on being constructed within a chamber the trap stands alone but has an access or plunge shaft rising from it.

Common defects found on interceptors include root ingress , fracturing and general build up of fats and grease. If the traps are causing problems it is worth considering removing them and replacing theme them with a straight section of pipe
